Finasteride is used for the treatment of male androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) in both men and women. In men, it works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. In women, it is used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and in both men and women, it is used to slow the progression of hair loss. Finasteride is only available on prescription.
